Dark sugar & Oat soda bread recipe from Escape to the Farm Kate Humble

Make the delicious dark sugar & oat soda bread recipe featured in Escape to the Farm.


  • 100 g oats
  • 225 g water
  • 30 g butter
  • 100 g low fat yoghurt
  • 200 g cold milk
  • 1 tbsp of brown sugar
  • 325 g wholemeal flour
  • 1.5 tsp bicarb
  • 3/4 tsp salt

18 – 20cm cake tin – greased & lined


  • Preheat oven to 180 C
  • Soak oats in boiled water for 15 mins in a large bowl
  • Add butter from side plate into bowl, which will just melt from heat of the water
  • Add yogurt, milk, and sugar. Mix using a spoon
  • Stir the flour, bicarb and salt into the mixture using same spoon
  • Pour mixture into greased and lined cake tin
  • Cover with foil and bake in oven for 15 minutes
  • Wearing oven gloves, remove the foil and bake for a further 30 minutes
  • Wearing oven gloves, remove from and place on cooling rack
