Learn How to Shear Sheep

Learn how to shear sheep with Humble by Nature farmer and award-winning shearer Tim Stephens.
Shearing is an important part of sheep husbandry and crucial to their welfare. This shearing course will give you a straightforward, practical guide to the art of shearing. Shearing is an early summer job and courses take place from the end of May until the beginning of July.
On this course you’ll:
This will be a fun, physical day on the farm and is for anyone, whether you have sheep or not.
Start in the classroom and learn about the basic technique of shearing, why and when you should be doing it.
Watch Farmer Tim demonstrate how to shear and then roll the fleece. He’ll share his tips of the trade and show you how to avoiding cutting the sheep and injuring yourself. Then it’s your turn, Tim will be on hand to give you all the help and advice you need.
You’ll spend the afternoon perfecting your technique. If you’ve got sheep at home, you should be ready to take the plunge and do them yourself by the end of the day.
We’ll finish the day with tea and cake and the opportunity to ask any further questions.
Excellent day. Lots of hands on practice and lots of laughter!
We had an amazing time staying on the farm in the Humble Hideaway, and doing the sheep shearing course.
Tim is an amazing instructor! Most people would probably not describe this course as relaxing, but it was, it was informative and rewarding and you get to see the fruits of your labour!
Thank you very much Farmer Tim and Joe for having endless patience whilst teaching me (and others) how to shear sheep yesterday. You both worked so hard so that we could all experience getting a fleece off.
Learn How to Shear Sheep will run from 10am until 4pm and includes a delicious farm lunch.
The day will be spent outside but under cover in our sheep race or lambing shed. Please check the weather for NP25 and dress appropriately, including:
– Waterproof boots or wellies and weather-proof clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty.
– You will probably smell a bit ‘sheepy’ by the end of the day. You might want to bring some clean clothes to change into for your journey home.
Shearing is a physical activity and may be unsuitable if you have back problems and during pregnancy.
