Carve a Butter Knife, Spatula and Spoon

Learn how to carve a wooden butter knife, spatula and spoon in this one day course with experienced green wood worker Maurice Clother. This traditional craft will see you using an axe, knife and crook knife to shape beautiful and functional kitchenware.
During the day, you will learn the essentials of safe carving. The day will start by making a butter knife, as your skills develop you will progress to a spatula and, finally, carve a spoon. All the wood used today will be native hardwood, locally sourced.
Tools will be available to buy on the day, for anyone who would like to continue this craft at home.
You'll start with a discussion around what you'll be doing today and the tradition of the craft.

It's time to get making. Maurice will give you as much guidance as you need to make your wooden cutlery - starting with your butter knife. Then you'll move onto the spatula and finally the more complex spoon.
Carve a wooden butter knife, spatula and spoon will run from 10am until approximately 4pm and includes a delicious farm lunch. The end time will depend on how quickly you work. Don’t worry, there’s no rush and you can have as much or as little help as you need.
We will provide all the materials and equipment for you. There will be an opportunity to buy tools, to further develop your skills at home at the end of the day.
Please dress warmly but with layers as you will be making your chair in one of our covered barns. You will need to bring gardening gloves and wear sturdy outdoor footwear.
