This first session will start in the class room learning about chicks and chickens. You'll learn how to care for them, ensuring they are happy healthy birds.

You'll also spend time getting to know the Humble by Nature chickens outside.

Getting your birds table ready

Daryn will explain how to get your bird table ready, showing you how to humanely dispatch a chicken before dressing it.

There will be an optional opportunity to dispatch your own bird, before having a go at dressing it yourself.

Raising Chickens for Meat

Course dates are yet to be confirmed but you can register your interest now by submitting our online enquiry form. As soon as dates are released we will be sure to notify you.

Learn how to raise, feed and care for day-old chicks until they are big enough for the table.

Daryn Williams, of Madgett’s Farm, will show you how to care for chickens ensuring that they are the best quality when they reach the table.

In this hands-on day Daryn will cover:

  • Caring for chicks
  • Where and how to house your chicks and chickens
  • Feeding chicks and chickens
  • General health issues
  • Keeping your birds safe
  • Learn how to get your birds table ready

Daryn will also demonstrate how to humanely dispatch a chicken. Everyone on the course will be given the opportunity to dispatch and dress their own chicken. You will take this chicken away at the end of the day to enjoy at home.

What to bring and other essential info

This course will run from 10am - 4pm.

It will feature plenty of hands-on experience with chicks and chickens, including the optional opportunity to dispatch and dress your own chicken. You will take this chicken away at the end of the day.
